It is a human tragedy that babies around the world are still being abandoned by desperate mothers. These “foundlings” are frequently left in such a way that they are quickly found. In Western countries, where social welfare systems are relatively sophisticated, such unfortunate children are not infrequently left outside or in the vicinity of a hospital. In Vietnam, a developing country with a difficult history of ongoing military conflict, the social welfare system is massively underdeveloped. The state is completely overwhelmed by many social issues. The people are left to manage many situations – especially illnesses – themselves, though in only few cases do they succeed.
